Space in a box
Text by: Sanam Mehdi

Space in a box; is what the designers deductions were when she took charge of the premises re-designing. The brief was simple; a restaurant with a bar facility and a lounge atmosphere where people can relax and enjoy viewing television. Special emphasis was on the younger crowd who after bowling or swimming likes to hang out with their friends in the restaurant. This was also to be a space for the hip-hop partying crowd

The 1200 square foot of hybrid space accommodates an eating area with a bar and lounge facility. Since there is no street presence and is housed in a sports and recreational club, the action lies on the inside. The space is accessed directly from the foyer and is located strategically being close to the bowling area and swimming pool. The highlight of the space is that it opens up to the pool and sits in harmony with the outside landscape. In the hot humid climate of Karachi, what better way to enjoy a cool drink and a bite while looking at the cooling waters of the pool and people enjoying themselves in it.

The space is twisted off the foyer and steps down where a drop ceiling in glass floats above the dance floor; flooring which not only defines the space but also creates the jazzy atmosphere required for dance floor. The space actually comes alive with the hanging glass lighting complemented by the hanging lanterns. The recti-linear space was perforated and used as picture windows to the calm serenity of the water outside.

The exterior was bought in to the interiors to form an extended cozy arm of the pool. The bar is tucked away in the corner, placed in a location which has a complete view of the restaurant hence prompting their servers to be vigilant to the clients need. Enveloped in warm wood nuances with a stark contrast of stainless steel ceiling is yet again a studied approach of play of different materials coming together in harmony.

The color scheme in earth tones gels in with the greens and blues of nature and the furniture layout actually breaks the box atmosphere and makes it more sinuous and dynamic. The various options of up and down lighting of hanging glass ceiling, beams and lanterns serve as an added advantage of changing the mood of the restaurant as and when required thereby multiplying the ambience of the space manifold.
